How Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy & Transpersonal Psychology Are Supporting Frontline COVID-19 Healthcare Workers

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken the lives of over 2 million people world-wide, with 18,426 of those deaths in Canada as of January 20 2021. Clearly these are devastating numbers but the physical effects of the virus only tell one part of the story. The combination of a deadly global virus leading to wide-spread lock-downs, massive disruptions to work, routines and lifestyles, significantly reduced contact with friends or family and confusion around inconsistent messaging from both politicians and the medical field have also led to what some are calling a mental-health crisis. According to Dr Adrian James, the president of…

Theories and models of transpersonal psychology are beginning to transform the field of life coaching.

Introduction

Throughout history, human beings have described profoundly transformational and psychological experiences, both within and outside of a spiritual or religious context. These powerful and transformational experiences have been given many names or metaphors. Some of these include enlightenment, illumination, spiritual/religious/mystical experience, Nirvana, Satori, Moksha or awakening (Metzner (1980). These experiences, regardless of tradition or context, appear to share many characteristics, with self-transcendence as the most frequently cited (Taylor, 2015). In most cases these experiences are brief, lasting from only a few minutes to possibly a few days. However, as transpersonal coaches our goal should be to assist and encourage…

Following the attack on the US Capital, social-media companies may be facing renewed calls for increased regulations

Right-wing social-media platforms and extreme conservative voices which were instrumental in fomenting the seditious riots on the US Capitol last week are being taken down one-by-one by the major social-media and hosting platforms. These are unprecedented historical and unmistakably political, ideological and moral statements denouncing the growing threat of extreme right-wing terror groups “whose grievances are rooted in racism, misogyny, anti-Semitism, anti-LGBTQ sentiments, Islamophobia and perceptions of government overreach.” Some are also linking this rise in extreme right-wing terror groups with a concurrent rise in toxic masculinity among disenfranchised middle-class white men. Disenfranchised middle-class white men who not only found…

Donald Trump’s social media accounts are being suspended or taken down one by one following his incitement of violence and sedition at the US Capital.

Today Facebook implemented an indefinite ban on Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts. This follows yesterday’s 24 hour suspension by Facebook after removal of some of Donald Trump’s Facebook posts casting doubt on the election and praising his supporters. While Twitter also suspended his account yesterday for 12 hours after removing some congratulatory posts about the thugs who stormed the Capital. YouTube also removed a video where Trump praised the mobs who stormed Congress. This is more than flagging posts, this is now removal of posts by Trump along with a suspension on multiple platforms!

Venting about your employer or organization online can cause you more harm than good.

We all get frustrated sometimes with the people we work with, study with, volunteer with or live with. Or any group of people we hang out with and are tasked with “working” together in some capacity. Group dynamics are tricky and sometimes a perfect storm of less-than-emotionally-intelligent, egoic, abrasive or dismissive leadership or communication styles can clash with strong emotions or passions of other’s in the group and create tension and usually stalemate on any collaborative efforts. Nobody is perfect, effective team-work takes time to learn…

Can psychedelic science help us understand human consciousness and the nature of self?

Of all the ways that psychedelics are changing our understanding of mental-health and wellness, the areas I am personally most interested in and fascinated with, is how psychedelics are advancing our understanding of consciousness and the self. Studies have now linked the psychedelic experience, dissolution of the self and dissociative states with improvements in mental health, self-compassion, connections to nature, life meaning/purpose and overall wellbeing. These studies, and anyone who has experienced states of self-transcendence or self dissolution, suggest that the experience of self is far less…

(Episode 1) The Leading Edge of Psychedelic Medicine
Speaker: Rick Doblin

After more than 50 years of political suppression, in many parts of the world psychedelic research and medicine have exploded. This renewed interest in the science of psychedelics is revolutionizing mental-health care, addiction treatment, palliative care and our understanding of the nature of self, consciousness and mystical experiences. Every Tuesday between September 22 and December 29 2020 (17:00–18:30 PST), the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) in Canada is hosting 14 (1.5 hour) webinars to discuss the current state of the global psychedelic renaissance. “The 14 episode webinar series…

What is mindfulness and how does it work?

What exactly is mindfulness and where did this simple psychological and spiritual practice get its start? Why is everyone doing it and why are so many doctors recommending it for their patients? The first part of this question — what exactly is mindfulness? — has a surprisingly simple answer.

“Mindfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience. It isn’t more complicated than that. It is opening to or receiving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is, without either clinging to it or rejecting it.” ~Sylvia Boorstein

The rapid growth of psychedelic therapy and coaching services has increased the need for new ethical guidelines for providing services.

As more mental-health, counselling, coaching and wellness professionals engage psychedelics in their professions, the more we need a common ethical foundation to guide our efforts. This is important for a variety of reasons, one of which is the fact that treating with psychedelics, or guiding others in their use, is unlike any other form of therapy, counselling or coaching. For instance, with most pre-psychedelic approaches to psychotherapy or coaching, there is no expectation that you have first-hand experience with the…

“Death may be the greatest of all human blessings” ~ Socrates (469–399 B.C.E)

We are all going to die. Yet, many of us live our lives as if this mortal inevitability will happen to everyone else but us. It would seem that for Western culture, denial and suppression are the hallmarks of how we tend to orient ourselves on the topic of mortality. Death is something that happens to everyone else, and we seem to live out each day as if death is going to happen at some point down the long road of a long and healthy life. The…
